In 1960 the artist undertook his first major public commission. Over the next twenty years Taylor’s philosophical commitment to public commissions – as the most direct approach towards integrating the artist with a broad non-specialist audience – was unfailing.

I was feeling at that period that public commissions were a useful way of . . . it sounded idealistic, but it seems a useful way for the artist to be employed and a useful way in which the public can see art, because normally they don’t see it or ever think about it . . . That interested me considerably. It does work; in fact I still believe in it.
