Artbar - Dan Sultan launches 2014 season

12 December 2013

Performing live at the Art Gallery of WA on Thursday 6 March 2014, Dan Sultan will launch the sixth season of ARTBAR.

After erupting back onto the scene with bold soul-rock shot ‘Under Your Skin’ — his first release in over four years, Dan Sultan is set to return and give the first electrifying taste of his upcoming album. This is his only performance in Perth as part of his capital city tour.

A private view: modern masters from the kerry stokes collection

This focussed exhibition showcases works from the Kerry Stokes Collection, one of Australia’s most significant and respected private collections. Although a personal selection, the 26 works on display represent the major art movements of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a period of great change and experimentation in European art.

AGWA celebrates the end of the world reimagined

With just over two weeks to go until the Van Gogh, Dalí and Beyond exhibition heads home to New York, the Gallery is readying to farewell the exhibition with its Last Hurrah! closing celebration.

 

Van Gogh, Dalí and Beyond: The World Reimagined has received excellent reviews and AGWA Director, Stefano Carboni urges people not to miss out on viewing these masterpieces from The Museum of Modern Art, New York.

AGWA Night’s Last Hurrah! closing celebration promises to be a fitting farewell and must-attend event for Perth with live music by Bob Evans and 2013 WAM Song of the Year Winner, Mathas. Van Gogh, Dalí and Beyond will remain open until late, and there is food and drink available at the AGWA Nights’ pop-up bar.

EMERGING ART LEADERS TO GATHER IN PERTH - DESERT RIVER SEA

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM FOR INDIGENOUS ART LEADERS

From 11-15 November 2013 a group of 11 emerging Indigenous art leaders throughout the Kimberley region of Western Australia will gather in Perth for the Emerging Leaders Program, a week-long professional development program which is a core component of the Desert River Sea: Kimberley Art Then & Now project.

Desert River Sea: Kimberley Art Then & Now is an Art Gallery of Western Australia initiative funded by the Rio Tinto Community Investment Fund.

2013 WAM Song of the Year Winner, Mathas, joins Bob Evans at closing party for Van Gogh, Dalí and Beyond

Bob Evans and 2013 WAM Song of the Year Winner, Mathas, will perform on Friday 29 November at the AGWA Nights Last Hurrah! for Van Gogh, Dalí and Beyond.

Introduced in 2012, to coincide with the launch of the MoMA Series, AGWA Nights is the Gallery’s Friday night offering that brings together art, music and more.

Along with the musical performances by Bob Evans and Mathas, the AGWA Nights Last Hurrah! also offers one of the last chances to view the Van Gogh, Dalí and Beyond exhibition, before it closes on Monday 2 December.

Allsorts Comedy - Improv & Quiz Nights at AGWA Nights

The Art Gallery of WA has announced two special nights of comedy with an artistic twist!

As part of the Van Gogh, Dalí and Beyond season of AGWA Nights, comedian John Robertson will host an Improv Night on Friday 18 October and comedian Dave Callan a Quiz Night on Friday 25 October.

Brian Robinson of Waiben (Thursday Island), Queensland, is the recipient of the Western Australian Indigenous Art Award of $50,000, the nation’s richest Indigenous arts prize for exceptional achievements by an Australian Indigenous artist. Robinson was selected from 137 nominations received from across Australia.

Churchill Cann of Warmun, Western Australia, is the recipient of the Western Australian Artist Award of $10,000. This prize is awarded for the exceptional achievements of a Western Australian Indigenous artist.

Since AGWA’s first acquisition in 1895, the State Art Collection has been continuously evolving through purchases, donations and bequests. To celebrate the latest additions to the Collection, Recent Acquisitions Your Collection presents a selection of the Gallery’s treasured acquisitions from the past two years. All of the works in Recent Acquisitions are now on show for the first time at the Gallery and will remain on display until Sunday 27 October 2013.

AGWA's latest MoMA exhibition is set to capture the imagination of WA

Opening on 22 June, Van Gogh, Dalí and Beyond: The World Reimagined brings to Perth a feast of world-class works from The Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Arriving direct from New York, this exhibition presents over 130 works by more than 90 artists who together reinvented the traditional genres of landscape, still life and portraiture and reimagined how we view the world through art.

Continuing on from the success of the Gallery’s jazz themed nights, comedy debates, Curator tours and Game-on! Fridays, AGWA Nights returns every Friday night during Van Gogh, Dalí and Beyond with a whole new line-up of Western Australian talent.

This new season of AWGA Nights is jam-packed with art and entertainment including live WA music supported by the West Australian Music Industry Association, the burlesque sketching antics of Dr Sketchy’s Anti Art School, comedy nights, Curator tours, special guests and AGWA Talks. All wrapped-up with the usual AGWA Nights extras, including the Manhattan-inspired popup bar and guided tours.

Year 12 perspectives 2012 Santos people's choice award winner

12 June 2013

The Year 12 Perspectives 2012 Santos People’s Choice Award was awarded to Christopher Nguyen whose work Command S was voted the most popular by Gallery audiences.

Christopher attended Applecross Senior High School. As part of his prize his school will also receive 30 tickets to visit the Van Gogh, Dalí and Beyond: The World Reimagined exhibition from The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, opening at the Gallery on 22 June. One lucky voter also wins a season pass for two to this extraordinary MoMA Series exhibition.

AGWA Says Goodbye to New York Photography with The Last Hurrah!

With less than two weeks to go until the Picturing New York exhibition must head home to New York, the Gallery is gearing up to say goodbye with a big Last Hurrah!

This closing celebration promises to be a must-attend event for those last minute exhibition viewers and nostalgic AGWA Nights regulars. Showcasing all the highlights from this season of AGWA Nights, you’ll enjoy the last AGWA Talk – Adventures and Architecture in NYC, a guided tour of the exhibition, cheer on the Game-On finalists as they vie for the Game-On championship, along with an awesome line-up of music. Jack Doepel Trio perform and RTR FM DJs Chris Wheeldon and Aarom Wilson will present a carefully curated set of highlights throughout New York’s musical history. So expect to hear anything from Benny Goodman to Animal Collective, from the Ramones to the Beastie Boys!

Come down from 5-7pm and listen to RTR FM’s live broadcast outside AGWA. The Art Gallery Café will be open to purchase food and drinks whilst enjoying the live broadcast.

From New York to a New World - AGWA prepares for Van Gogh, Dalí and Beyond: The World Reimagined

Thousands of Western Australians have enjoyed visiting New York City without leaving Perth, thanks to the current exhibition Picturing New York. And while many more are expected to visit this stunning photography display before it closes on 12 May, the Gallery team is also looking ahead to the next exhibition, Van Gogh, Dalí and Beyond: The World Reimagined.

This third exhibition in the MoMA Series promises to capture the imagination of WA, and indeed Australia, with its impressive selection of works of art offering innovative interpretations of traditional genres.

ART GALLERY OF WA AND RIO TINTO ANNOUNCE NEW INDIGENOUS ARTS PROJECT DESERT RIVER SEA: KIMBERLEY ART THEN & NOW

After two years of consultation, The Art Gallery of Western Australia with support from the Rio Tinto Community Investment Fund today announced the launch of a six-year $1.8 million Kimberley art initiative Desert River Sea: Kimberley Art Then & Now.

Desert River Sea has grown from extensive community consultation and research undertaken by the Gallery with art centres, elders and community members across the region. This consultation phase was also enabled through support from Rio Tinto who, “took a leap of faith in supporting the Gallery’s vision,” according to Joanne Farrell, Board member of the Rio Tinto Community Investment Fund.

Artists Selected to Exhibit in Australia's Richest Indigenous Art Prize

Sixteen finalists will be represented in the exhibition of the Western Australian Indigenous Art Awards 2013. The artists who have been invited to participate in the awards exhibition have the opportunity to share in $65,000 in prizes. The awards comprise a group exhibition of outstanding art and three non-acquisitive awards totalling $65,000: the Western Australian Indigenous Art Award of $50,000; the Western Australian Artist Award of $10,000; and the People’s Choice Award of $5,000.

From the streets of New York to the walls of the Art Gallery of Western Australia

Today, the Art Gallery of Western Australia celebrated the arrival of Picturing New York: Photographs from The Museum of Modern Art, the second exhibition in the MoMA series, which is supported by the State Government through Eventscorp.


Drawn exclusively from MoMA’s extraordinary photography collection, the exhibition traces the dynamic rise of modern photography from 1888 to 2005 through a multitude of visions of the ever-changing city and its famously diverse population.


Artists include Berenice Abbott, Diane Arbus, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Walker Evans, Lee Friedlander, Nan Goldin, Helen Levitt, Cindy Sherman, Alfred Stieglitz, Paul Strand, Weegee, and Garry Winogrand. With over 150 photographs by 90 artists, Picturing New York truly is a celebration of New York in all its vitality, ambition and beauty and of the exhilarating relationship between photography and the ‘city that never sleeps’.

Central Park styled celebrations at AGWA

11 January 2013

Picturing New York kicks off on Friday 25 January, 5.30-10pm, with a Central Park-themed Opening Party! Be one of the first to see this world class exhibition from The Museum of Modern Art, New York, plus enjoy roaming performances by the Junkadelic Collective, cool projection art from VJ Zoo and DJ sets from RTRFM 92.1 DJs .

Throughout the evening, Adam Trainer – Music Director, RTRFM, and Jade Nobbs from RTRFM's Soulsides and El Ritmo programs, will be playing everything New York! From Tin Pan Alley, through to downtown jazz and blues, garage and latin-influenced funk, to East Coast hip hop, CBGBs punk and no wave, as well as contemporary indie rock from the home of the hipsters: Brooklyn.
